Home by Nico (February: Hebrides) Review

So for Valentine’s day this year, instead of booking a restaurant weeks earlier, we opted (I say this as if I had a choice ha!) for a nice fancy dine in delivery from the team who brought us ‘Six by Nico’ – their Home by Nico, February Hebrides collection. Home by Nico flaunts that they will bring you ‘restaurant quality food from around the globe in the comfort of your home’ and considering we enjoyed our experience at Six by Nico, Manchester, we were looking forward to it very much.

So here’s how it works, they bring you a different menu each month – February was Hebrides, March (which is now out by the way) is Tuscany. Essentially the cities work like a theme and the team provide you with six different courses which fits around this theme.

They are priced £60, they send you portions for two and a bottle of wine! Considering there’s many fancy dine in restaurant quality food coming up, I think £60 is more than reasonable especially for two people!

What’s in the box?

The box is larger and heavier than you think. Thanks to the cheeky wine probably.

Loved the little map and two instructions – so the larger booklet on the left is for cooking instructions (minimal cooking is actually involved though) and the leaflet ono the right is the course details – the actual menu!
Loving the sound of gin cured salmon!

Delivered to your door!

Preparation and cooking instruction was easy to follow. We lit a nice scented candle, dimmed our lounge lights for ambience and set our dining table.

Menu

  • Isle of Harris Gin Cured Smoked Salmon (starter)
    • Cucumber & apple chutney – dill creme fraiche
  • Stornoway Black Pudding & Pork Belly Presse (Main course)
    • Scot broth & white bean ragu
  • Warm Potato Salad & Shellfish Rouille (Side dish)
    • Pickled turnip – barbecue dressing
  • Salt Baked Beetroot (Side dish)
    • Hebridean blue cheese – walnut dressing
  • Tipsy Laird Trifle (Dessert)
    • Stem ginger jelly – sea buckthorn – vanilla ice cream
  • Mull Cheddar (Cheese)
    • Onion & tamarind relish – water crackers
  • Septimo Sentido Verdejo (Wine)
    • Castilla – La Mancha, Spain

One thing that was slightly disappointing was that unlike the restaurant, this dine in set didn’t really have 6 courses due to the fact that it had 2 side dishes. And the side dishes needed to have with the main course of pork dish. Also, I felt like the beetroot dish did not have so much walnut on the dressing compared to picture from their leaflet! I couldn’t find any walnut on ours unfortunately. Having said that, the potato salad’s shellfish rouille was so delicious and the actual courses – starter, main and dessert were amazing!

Unfortunately I have no pictures of the starter as we both ate it too quickly. It was so delicious! One thing is, to ensure you take the dill creme fraiche out of the fridge about an hour before you eat them though, otherwise they will get too watery!

Main dish with the sides! – loved the crackling detail on the top of pork!

All in all, we had a lovely dinner and I would recommend it to those who want to try something new but not too expensive for a special occasion! Although I don’t think I will order Tuscany for March because I am not 100% on the broccoli side dish (don’t like broccoli!)

Overall score:

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Pros

  • Cost – not too expensive!
  • Able to try different courses
  • Overall tastes really good. Especially the salmon starter! mmmmm
  • Comes nearly all prepared, simplicity in cooking it!
  • Easy to follow instructions
  • Good delivery service – they used DPD with me and you get 1 hour allocated time
  • Wine was surprisingly good – haven’t had white wine in ages and we both really enjoyed it!
  • You get to dress fancy in your own home – it felt like absolute years since I got to dress up nicely and put some make up!

Cons

  • Not 100% 6 courses – which is different compared to Six by Nico restaurant (although perhaps this might be different for different months)
  • Every course, one person has to get up to go prepare it haha – this might be because we weren’t very good at coordinating.
  • Beetroot side dish was so-so (sorry)
  • Has to often pre-order for the month to come! I actually did not know what menu Feb will be – but I had to pre-order in January to ensure we would get this in Feb.

If you guys have any more recommendations for me to review and try – please let me know! Always open to suggestions 🙂

As always, thanks for reading x
